What Is Body Stress Release?

Non-therapeutic health techniquesBody Stress Release is a non-therapeutic, complementary health technique that releases stored tension from your muscles in order for you to start healing yourself. It does not diagnose or treat. Nor does it use medication, machines, involve massage, manipulation, pressure points or meridians. It is a hands-on technique performed on a fully clothed person on a hi-low bed. It is a very gentle technique that can be performed on newborn babies to the frail and elderly.

Every person is exposed to different kinds of stress on a daily basis, for instance mechanical, emotional and chemical stress. Your body is designed to be stress-free and it releases this tension without you even knowing about it. When you go into an overload of stress, the body stores it in your muscles and this is what we call body stress. Some people experience it more in a physical way, for instance headaches, sciatica, shoulder pain, backache, cramps, pins and needles, etc. Other people experience it more in an emotional way, for instance feeling anxious, depressed, having panic attacks, anger outbursts or crying. Body stress is always a combination of all 3 different kinds of stress although one might be more predominant.

When a client comes for BSR for the first time, a full medical history will be taken. The practitioner will also gather more information with regards to the reason why the client came for BSR. Advice about maintaining correct posture after the release, as well as other relevant information about exercise and healthy lifestyle, is given. The practitioner will always recommend 3 initial sessions of BSR in a period of 10 days as BSR is a process and not a quick fix. Thereafter, monthly maintenance will be recommended.

The most common aftereffects of Body Stress Release are headaches and feeling tired. It is important to drink enough water after the release as BSR helps you to detox and you need to flush the toxins from your body. Feeling tired is just your body’s way of telling you that you need rest. It takes a lot of energy to store tension, release it and heal.

BSR started in essence with the story of Ewald Meggersee who fell from a tree at the age of 5. He was unconscious for a week and when he woke up he felt a deep, burning pain in his lower back and shooting pains in his legs. He also experienced many more symptoms, for example frequency of urinating, numbness of his hands and a funny feeling in his stomach which eased if he kept eating during the day.

During his school years, he was often reprimanded for fidgeting as he was moving his legs trying to ease the pain. He struggled to participate in gym or other sports and was labelled as an attention-seeker when he could not do what the other boys did.

Ewald met Gail at university, they got married and still he had many issues related to the fall as a child. One morning he woke up with no feeling from the waist down. He rolled out of bed, pulled himself upright clinging to the wardrobe door and hung until the feeling returned to his legs. This happened several times and he admitted being afraid of going to bed as he might wake up one day permanently paralysed. He tried chiropractic, which brought some relief, for a few hours. Then Ewald and Gail decided to study chiropractic in the USA. His lower-back problem persisted through the years until he attended a weekend workshop by a retired chiropractor, Dr van Rumpt. He developed a procedure for accurately ‘reading’ the body’s muscular responses, they got his permission to use this technique and they returned to South Africa and started using it in their practice. About one year later, Ewald woke up one morning with no pain at all for the first time since he had the fall at the age of 5. After this day he experienced pain again on and off until he became pain free after 30 years.
